What drugs help against parasites in the human body?

No one is safe from helminths.And even the cleanest person runs the risk of contracting a helminthic infestation in society.If a problem is identified, anthelmintic drugs will easily cope with the function of protecting the body from parasites.

Symptoms of helminth damage

The first symptom indicating the need for examination should be any allergic reaction without obvious contact with a possible allergen.An example would be a rash that was not preceded by contact with aggressive substances or abuse of foods from a group of potential allergens.Also, long-term bronchitis, treatment of which by a therapist does not give a positive result, may indicate the presence of a parasite.

Abnormal bowel movements are another reason to get tested for helminthiasis.If the parasite has settled in the intestines, it can interfere with normal peristalsis and bowel movements.When the intestines become a haven for certain dangerous types of worms, a person may experience a lack of strength and may also develop anemia or severe lack of nutrients in the blood.This is explained by the fact that the parasite eats all the beneficial substances in the intestines faster than they can be absorbed into the blood.Therefore, weakness is also a symptom.

Pinworms infect the anus.As a result, itching in the anus is the main symptom of the presence of the parasite.The female pinworm emerges mainly at night through the anus and lays eggs in the folds of the anus, lubricating them with her secretion.The substance irritates the mucous membrane, causing itching.

If there are parasites in the body, the number of eosinophils in the blood increases.The number of these cells also increases with a progressive allergic reaction.Therefore, if the number of eosinophils in the biochemical blood test is higher than normal, you should be tested for helminthiasis.

Popular medications for worms: reliable and effective

symptoms of parasites in the body

Parasitic diseases are among the most common.According to the World Health Organization, every tenth case of health problems is caused by helminths.The choice of anthelmintic drugs depends on the types of parasites, their locations in the body, concomitant diseases, and the severity of the infection.

Types of helminths

The general name helminths combines several groups of worms belonging to different species:

  • nematodes - roundworms, which include pinworms, hookworms, roundworms, worms, trichinella and many others, having a cylindrical body shape in cross-section, represent the most numerous type of helminths;
  • cestodes - flat-shaped tapeworms: echinococcus, pork, bovine tapeworm, wide tapeworm, these parasites can reach large sizes and cause deadly damage to internal organs;
  • trematodes - leaf-shaped worms: various types of flukes, flukes, localized inside the tissues of organs.

Types of anthelmintic drugs

All medications for worms are fundamentally divided into:

  • Highly specialized products: designed for a specific type of worms and are used only if it has been laboratory determined what kind of parasite lives in the body.Only the attending physician has the right to prescribe highly specialized anthelmintic drugs and select their dosage, taking into account the toxicity of the active substance in anthelmintic drugs, health status, age, and weight category.
  • Broad-spectrum anthelmintic drugs.They affect all known types of worms and can be used for preventive purposes.

Anti-worm medications produced by the pharmaceutical industry differ in their mechanism of action on parasites, comprising 2 main groups.

  1. A group of anthelmintic drugs whose active substances paralyze the muscles and organelles of worms.Worms lose the ability to move, feed, and die.Dead parasites are excreted from the body in their natural form along with feces.
  2. Deworming agents that destroy metabolic processes in the tissues of parasites, so that after death they become susceptible to the action of the human enzyme system and are partially digested by the body.In this case, the remaining helminths are excreted in a destroyed form.

Almost all anti-worm tablets are recommended to be taken during meals or after meals.During the treatment period, it is advisable to combine anthelmintics with laxatives or enterosorbents to cleanse the body of toxins and dead parasites.

Treatment of nematodes

Effective anthelmintics against all types of roundworms - based on the substance levamisole.It is used against ascariasis, enterobiasis, trichuriasis and a number of other diseases.The anthelmintic effect is based on intervention in the metabolic processes of parasites.Levamisole helps strengthen the immune system by activating the functions of T cells and macrophages that are aggressive to foreign proteins.

Anti-helminth medications, the active ingredient of which is mebendazole, are used for all types of nematodes: roundworms, pinworms, trichinella, whipworms, and toxocara.They treat mixed types of helminthic infestations and are used to prevent disease in cases of suspected helminthiasis.The most effective remedies for roundworms in adults:

The action of medications is based on blocking the feeding processes of helminths and destroying their bodies.Contraindications for use are liver failure, hypersensitivity to mebendazole.Side effects from taking it may include nausea, dizziness, weakness, and dyspepsia.

Treatment of cestodiases and trematodes

Diseases caused by trematodes and cestodes cause serious damage to the intestines, liver, lungs and other internal organs and require hospital treatment under the supervision of specialists.To treat trematodes, highly specialized agents and anthelmintic drugs are used, broad-spectrum drugs against all types of helminths:

These anthelmintics act against extraintestinal forms of trematodes in humans caused by feline, lanceolate, Chinese fluke, liver and pulmonary flukes, and schistosome.The active compounds of the drugs disrupt the structure of the cell membranes of worms, helping to paralyze their muscles.

For cestodiasis caused by dwarf, pork or bovine tapeworm, broad tapeworm, drugs based on niclosamide are used, which paralyzes various types of tapeworms living in the intestines:

Anthelmintic drugs based on the active substance albendazole, the latest generation, have the universal ability to destroy almost all types of worms in humans.The most effective drugs:

These broad-spectrum anthelmintic drugs are used to treat various forms of nematoses, echinococcus, alveococcus, trematodes, tapeworms, as well as giardiasis and various mixed infections.The chemicals of these medications interfere with the biological metabolic processes of parasites - the glycogen reserves of their tissues are depleted, due to which the internal environment of the human body becomes aggressive for helminths.At the same time, paralysis of the intestinal system of worms occurs.

Worms

Worms(scientific namehelminths) are worms that live inside humans.Worms are parasites, that is, organisms whose life activity is based on the exploitation of the host organism.

Helminths (worms) are the most common human parasites.According to research, every 4th person in the world is infected with worms.70 species of worms have been registered in our country.They all belong to three classes: roundworms, flatworms and flukes.The most common roundworms are roundworms, mainly pinworms, roundworms and whipworms.

There are also intestinal and extraintestinal helminths.Intestinal are those that live in the lumen of the human intestine, and extraintestinal (or tissue) are those living in muscle tissue or organs.Worms can affect the brain, lungs, liver, and lymphatic vessels.

Several types of helminths can parasitize one person at once, and this is a fairly common situation.

Infection of a person with worms is calledhelminthic infestation.The term is also usedhelminthiasis.

Causes of helminthiases

How does worm infection occur?

Adults inside a person lay a huge number of eggs (hundreds and thousands per day).Worm eggs are excreted from the human body along with feces.In order for a new host to become infected, it is necessary for the helminth eggs to enter his intestines.In most cases, this occurs along with food intake, for example, when eating with unwashed hands or when eating unwashed vegetables and fruits.Some types of helminthic infestations are geohelminthiasis.In this case, the eggs of the parasite must first mature by remaining in the soil for some time (such as roundworms).Other types of worms are used for the maturation of intermediate “hosts” - animals.These are tapeworms - the most famous of the flat parasitic worms - bovine and pork.Their larvae mature in the muscles of animals and enter the human body along with meat that has not undergone proper heat treatment, and already inside a person they turn into an adult.

The opposite situation is also possible, when the human body is used by the helminth as an incubator for the larvae.The final host of such parasites is a predator.The predator is expected to catch the prey and eat the meat infected with the larvae.In this regard, a person is a dead end - a larva that gets into it will not turn into an adult, but the larvae of predatory worms can cause us a lot of harm. In the human environment, two predatory animals are typical - a dog and a cat.They can become a source of infection.The eggs of worms from these animals enter the human intestine, where they hatch into larvae, which can then migrate throughout the body.The liver is most often affected.To prevent infection from pets, you should not kiss them, and a dog that can become infected with helminths while running along the street must be subjected to regular treatment for worms.

ways of infection with worms

Also, worm eggs can enter our body through inhalation of dust or with a sip of water when swimming in a pond.Flies carry worm eggs.

Worms in children

Children become infected with worms more often than adults.Small children tend to put everything in their mouth.While walking, children play on the ground and in the sandbox.They can hug and kiss strangers and stray animals.They don't care about dirty hands.

Therefore, it is so important to try to instill hygiene skills in children as early as possible.Young children should be supervised during walks, always having water and disinfectants ready to wash their hands and wipe their faces in time.And at the first signs of helminthic infestation, you should consult a doctor.

Enterobiasis – helminthiasis caused by pinworms

Pinworms are detected more often than other helminths (in 90% of cases of detection of worm infection).

Pinworms are grayish-white roundworms ranging from 2 to 12 mm in length.They parasitize the intestines.Females descend along the rectum, emerge from the anus and lay eggs around its circumference, after which they die.In this case, the patient feels severe itching in the anus.When scratching, pinworm eggs get on the skin of the hands and under the nails.Thus, if hygiene rules are not followed, constant self-infection is possible.

Pinworms have a short lifespan - 3-4 weeks.Theoretically, in order to be cured, hygiene procedures are enough - daily washing, keeping your hands clean, regularly changing your underwear and bed linen.And in a month the pinworms should disappear.However, since they primarily infect children, it is often impossible to ensure the necessary level of hygiene.Therefore, if you suspect enterobiasis, you should consult a doctor.

The main symptom of enterobiasis is itching in the anal area.

Ascariasis - helminthiasis caused by roundworms

Ascariasis is diagnosed in 70% of cases of helminth infection.

Ascaris is a round worm, the length of which reaches 25 cm in males and 40 cm in females. Ascaris eggs must mature in the ground.Ripe eggs enter the human body when eaten with dirty hands or from unwashed vegetables and fruits.A larva hatches from an egg in the human intestine, but, unlike an adult, it requires air.Therefore, the larva, which at this moment has a microscopic size, penetrates the blood vessels and migrates throughout the body, reaching the lungs.In the lungs, the larvae grow and mature, moving through the alveoli into the bronchi, and from the bronchi into the trachea.The human body reacts to the helminth by coughing (this is a specific symptom of ascariasis).The larvae are expectorated along with sputum and are accidentally ingested by humans.This allows the already developed larva to enter the intestine again, where the adult continues to exist.The entire migration process takes about 2 weeks.

Roundworms can live in the human body for up to a year, in some cases longer.During this period, the waste products of roundworms poison the body of the “host”, causing disturbances in the functioning of the digestive, nervous and reproductive systems.

Methods for diagnosing helminthiasis

Since the symptoms of helminthiases coincide with the signs of many other diseases, before prescribing treatment it is necessary to make sure that worms are actually present in the body.For this purpose, various laboratory diagnostic methods are used.

If a helminthic infestation is suspected, the first step is to perform a stool test for worm eggs.To be more confident in the absence of worms, it is recommended to do such an analysis several times (a negative result in the case of a single analysis does not guarantee that there are no worms).However, enterobiasis cannot be detected using stool analysis.

Giardiasis - symptoms and treatment

What is giardiasis?We will discuss the causes, diagnosis and treatment methods in an article by a doctor, an infectious disease specialist with 14 years of experience.

pork tapeworm in the human body

Definition of disease.Causes of the disease

Giardiasisis an acute and chronic parasitic disease of humans in the form of manifest forms or carriage, caused by intestinal lamblia, which colonize the mucous membrane of mainly the small intestine, disrupt the processes of parietal digestion and contribute to the development and aggravation of damage to the gastrointestinal tract and other diseases.

What Giardia looks like:

Giardia in the human body

In the anterior third of the body there is a suction disk in the form of a special depression.With its help, Giardia attaches to the villi of the mucous membrane of the small intestine.The cytoplasmic membrane of the posterior surface has club-shaped projections at the edges, which also creates an additional attachment component.

They reproduce by longitudinal division.Weakly stable in environmental conditions when leaving the host's body: at room temperature, even in the absence of aggressive factors, they quickly die.

The cystic form is immobile.The parasites are oval in shape, lack free flagella (complexly folded), their sizes reach 10-14 microns, and are surrounded by a thick shell, somewhat separated from the body (this feature is important when recognizing the species).

cysts in the human body

Mature cysts have four nuclei inside, immature cysts have two nuclei.Formed in the lower intestines during the process of exiting the body with feces.They are very stable in the external environment: they can be stored for months in water at a temperature of 4-20°C, and with good humidity they can survive on contaminated (contaminated) food products for up to a week.When boiled, the cysts die instantly, and when dried and low humidity, death occurs within 24 hours.Resistant to household water chlorination, alkalis and acids, and ultraviolet radiation.It tolerates low temperatures relatively well, but at the same time reduces its viability.

Symptoms of giardiasis

The incubation period lasts from several days to a month or more.Most often, the disease does not cause any clinical manifestations at all, especially in adults.

The main possible symptoms of giardiasis include:

  • Symptoms of intoxication and autonomic changes are increased fatigue, tearfulness, irritability, sleep disturbances, dizziness, arrhythmias, low-grade fever and others.
  • Symptoms of gastrointestinal tract damage are discomfort and pain of varying intensity and character in various parts of the abdomen, nausea, loss of appetite, a feeling of bitterness in the mouth, stool disorders (constipation and diarrhea), coating on the tongue and bad breath, weight loss and more.
  • Symptoms of skin damage are allergic rashes of various nature and localization, atopic dermatitis, pallor and roughness of the skin, increased dryness of the skin, cheilitis (inflammatory changes in the skin of the lips and their mucous membranes), seizures (cracks in the corners of the mouth), atypical/uncontrolled course of chronic skin pathologies.
  • Increased development and exacerbation of diseases not directly related to giardiasis - bronchial asthma, pseudo-allergic phenomena, gastritis, stomach and duodenal ulcers, cholecystitis, ulcerative colitis, arthritis and more.
  • Symptoms of malabsorption (loss of nutrients) are vitamin deficiencies, retardation in physical and mental development, dystrophy (these manifestations are more typical for children).

Giardiasis in children

As a rule, in children, the first symptoms of giardiasis are the appearance of low-grade or febrile temperature (37.1–38.0°C or 38.0–39.0°C), abdominal pain, nausea, sometimes vomiting, flatulence, and loose stools.The abdomen is painful, swollen, and growls along the intestines.Infants become restless, scream, sleep is disturbed, the symptoms of giardiasis intensify during and after feeding, allergic dermatoses and diaper rash may appear.Over time, if left untreated, this can lead to impaired growth and psycho-emotional development, frequent colds or allergies, and the development of chronic problems of the gastrointestinal tract.

In children of later age and adults, vivid symptoms of giardiasis are rarely observed - the gradual development of dyspeptic symptoms from the gastrointestinal tract of a moderate nature comes to the fore:

  • flatulence;
  • discomfort and pain in the abdomen, mainly in the umbilical region and right hypochondrium;
  • stool disorders in various combinations;
  • the appearance of plaque on the tongue;
  • sometimes bitterness in the mouth and skin manifestations (increased severity of acne, chronic polyetiological diseases, for example, psoriasis and dermatitis);
  • Possible autonomic disorders, headaches, dizziness, instability of blood pressure, increased body temperature, sensitivity of the lymph nodes.

Giardiasis in pregnant women

Giardiasis in pregnant women does not have any specific differences from giardiasis in other people, but can lead to an increased risk of developing B-12 deficiency anemia and decreased fetal weight (hypotrophy) in a pregnant woman.

Classification and stages of development of giardiasis

According to the clinical form, giardiasis is:

  • asymptomatic (carrier);
  • intestinal - mainly symptoms of the intestinal form, but there may also be gastric manifestations (discomfort in the abdomen, unstable stool, nausea);
  • biliary-pancreatic (reflex) - discomfort in the epigastrium and right hypochondrium, bitter taste in the mouth, increased incidence of poorly controlled gastroduodenitis and pancreatitis;
  • astheno-neurotic - weakness, lethargy, increased fatigue, irritability, emotional instability;
  • toxic-allergic - periodic rashes on the body, exacerbation of chronic skin diseases and bronchial asthma, eosinophilia;
  • mixed.

The course of giardiasis is of three types:

  • acute - up to one month;
  • subacute - 1-3 months;
  • chronic - more than three months.

According to the presence of complications, giardiasis is:

There are three degrees of the disease:

Complications of giardiasis

Specific and nonspecific complications of giardiasis are possible.

Specific ones include:

  • itchy, extensive rashes all over the body;
  • Quincke's edema - severe swelling of the subcutaneous tissue, sometimes accompanied by itching and a strong feeling of suffocation;
  • ophthalmopathy - disturbances in the perception of the organ of vision;
  • arthritis - discomfort and pain in the joints;
  • hypokalemic myopathy is weakness of certain muscle groups.

Nonspecific complications include:

  • layering of intercurrent diseases (secondary flora);
  • protein-energy deficiency (hypo- and vitamin deficiency, weight loss, anemia and others).

Diagnosis of giardiasis

Laboratory diagnosis of giardiasis includes:

  1. Clinical blood test- in the acute period, eosinophilia, basophilia and increased ESR are observed;in subsequent periods - moderate eosinophilia or normal eosinophil count, sometimes slight basophilia.
  2. Biochemical blood test- Sometimes there is an increase in the level of total bilirubin and amylase.
  3. Coprooscopic examination of stool- “gold standard” of diagnosis.It allows you to identify cysts (most often) and vegetative forms of Giardia (in rare cases).
  4. Immunochromatographic method and PCR diagnostics of stool(detection of antigens and nucleic acids of the parasite) - has good information content and can be used in combination with other research methods.
  5. ELISA diagnostics- a low-informative study, since the localization of Giardia in the intestinal lumen does not create conditions for a full-fledged immune response, which is observed mainly in children with an acute illness, which creates a significant number of erroneous results of both hypo- and hyperdiagnosis.
  6. Duodenal sounding(detection of vegetative forms of Giardia in the duodenum) - can be used in complex diagnostic cases and when coinvasion is suspected (for example, opisthorchiasis in opisthorchiasis).
  7. Ultrasound of the abdominal organs and FGDS- allow you to identify signs of impaired motility of the hepatobiliary region.

Differential diagnosis involves excluding the following diseases:

  • parasitic diseases of other etiology (both intestinal and extraintestinal localization);
  • chronic gastroduodenitis (symptoms similar);
  • intestinal infections (salmonellosis, dysentery, rotavirus and others);
  • intestinal dysbiosis (a collective concept characterized by stool instability, abdominal discomfort of various types, weight loss and other symptoms).

Treatment of parasites with folk remedies

The effectiveness and safety of traditional medicine methods have not been scientifically proven.Without adequate treatment, giardiasis can lead to various complications: urticaria, angioedema, visual impairment, arthritis and muscle weakness.

Forecast.Prevention

If adequate treatment is prescribed, the prognosis is favorable, complications are rare.

No specific prevention has been developed.The main emphasis should be on measures to comply with sanitary standards.
